Re: Picket Spacing For A Shadow-box Fence? For a 4 3/4" picket I would space them at 2 1/2" giving an inch of coverage on each side of the board. Any closer than 2 1/2" and I think it would look funny. 3" would look better but visibility will be increased.

Starting on the inside of the fence, butt your first picket up against the 4-by-4 post (it'll stick up above the post about 2 inches); check to see that it's plumb and nail it in using the 6d nails.
