I built my own fence but I suspect it cost more than it would have to buy ready made panels. Your local timber merchants probably sell 6x6' decent quality panels, I'd guess around £25-30.
Attach each panel with screws. While you work, it's usually a good idea to use two-three inch galvanized wood screws to attach your panels securely. Drill pilot holes to keep the wood clean and sharp-looking, then install enough wood screws to attach the panels securely. Support the fence panels as you work.

Using a measuring roll measure your yard to determine the amount of area that you want to fence in. You will need to know this to get the appropriate number of panels for your fence.
Step 6- Make grooves in corner posts. Place the groove inward at the end of your fence panel. Using the pocket holes, screw the fence panels into the corner posts. If you feel it isn’t sturdy enough, we also used 1 2 x 4 on each side to anchor it on the bottom with 2 pocket holes in the right and left side to drill into the corner posts.
Fewer posts will save you some digging, but in the long run, wind and gravity will make you pay for it in your privacy fencing. The more posts you have, the stronger your outdoor privacy fence will be. A good rule of thumb is to space posts just under 8 ft. apart to make sure your fence doesn’t sag.
Screw a set of hinges into the face of your gate. Your top hinge should attach through the top rail of your gate, and your bottom hinge should attach through the bottom rail. Have someone help you lift the gate and hold it in the opening of your fence. Hold the gate an inch or two off of the ground and attach the hinges to your fence post.
12) To create the fence panel, rip ¾ inch strips, then cut the strips and 2 by 4s to size to create the frame. 13) Screw the stops to the 2 by 4s using spacers to set them back ¾ of an inch from the front edge of each board and make sure it’s centred along the length.
Fortunately, you can use an extra fence panel to build your own custom gate for a fraction of the cost. Wood fence is easy to cut and alter, so creating a gate out of the fence is actually fairly simple. With the right tools and a little know-how, you can transform an ordinary panel of fence into a fully functional gate.
Select your fence type first so you can determine the available widths of each fence panel. See our fencing buying guide to learn about the different fence materials. Determine your property line (your utility company can help) and how you want your fence positioned in relation to it.
