Magic Deck is a tongue and groove deck cover system that will provide years of low maintenance, eliminate the need to paint or stain, and give new life to your decking…
By Mike Matthews. Composite decking is often touted as a maintenance-free alternative to lumber, yet over time its original color will fade, and some individual boards can become stained by spills. Composites aren't designed to be as paintable as natural wood planks, but they can accept paint if the deck is properly cleaned, prepped and primed.
A wooden deck is an attractive structure when it is well-maintained and can lasts for years under the right conditions. But wood is subject to mold and rot if it is not properly cleaned and sealed. Covering the wood deck helps protect the wood from rain, wind and other harsh elements. Numerous coverings exist that don't cost you a lot of money.
Another option is to pull up the existing decking and replace them with composite boards. Deck Strip Deck strip products are relatively inexpensive, and they come in long rolls of linoleumlike strips that cover existing deck boards.
decks cannot be installed directly on existing wood planks, but we do have other options. If your deck is in desperate need of a makeover, but you don’t want to start from scratch, you can replank your deck with capped wood composite decking. Replanking is when you remove the old deck surface planks, and install over the substructure.
With a carpet, you'll want to lay plywood subflooring panels on top of the existing decking boards to rid the floor of the decking gaps that would leave your carpet uneven. Composite Overlay If your existing deck subfloor is level, you can install an overlay made of weather-resistant composite materials manufactured to resemble real wood or tile.
Also, you will be expediting the deterioration of the deck. If you want a good synthetic surface that is less maintenance pull the top boards off, pressure wash and reseal the structural timbers and joists, then install a composite top like Seventrust brand or similar. It costs a lot more than new wood decking but is far less maintenance.
If the decking is warped, the joists may also be, and you may have to replace a joist or two. The best way to install composite boards is to use hidden fasteners -- they screw to the joists and hook into grooves in the sides of the boards to hold them down. You can also attach composite decking boards to the joists with 3-inch deck screws.
When updating a deck with new decking, it’s crucial that the old decking be removed so the joists and beams can be assessed and repaired if necessary. Installing decking over old decking will drastically reduce the lifespan of the material. The joints between two materials will readily trap water in wet environments.

Whether you have a wood or composite deck, you’ll have to deal with stains and discoloration over time. This can be caused by mold, especially with composite decking. A mold problem is an even bigger issue if your deck is in a shaded area or stays wet throughout the day.
Provided the deck is structurally sound and doesn’t have an uneven surface due to warped planks, you can generally lay interlocking wood tiles, structural wood tiles or porcelain pavers directly over the top of the existing deck boards.
If you decide to sink your screws through the deck board, it gives you more room to work with, but going through the board also gives water a direct path into the core of the board. For this reason, if you choose to anchor your boards this way use a composite that is fully capped and dense enough to resist moisture.
