4×4 Guard Posts. I bought 8 foot long #1 grade pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine 4×4 posts from a local lumber yard. The minimum height from the deck boards to top of the guardrail is 36 inches per the Georgia deck code (see Figure 27 on page 15).The existing deck rail is 37-1/2 inches high so I was able to install the guard posts before tearing off the rail cap and pickets.
I wanted to install my railings set back from the edge of my deck. But I didn't want to cut through the actual deck to lag the posts to the joists. Plus I didn't have the time to do all that work. I've never used base supports before so I was very concerned about how sturdy they would be. I cut off the flange that attached deck posts to the side of my deck, and just set the post in the base and screwed it down. It takes 12 screws to attach the base to the deck, and another 8 screws to attach the post.
